Microsoft Surface for business, or the one at the store

Protected TrustOctober 2026 · 2 min read

Yes, there are two versions of most Microsoft Surface computers.

The Surface Pro and Surface Laptop on a store shelf are consumer models. Microsoft also sells "for Business" editions of the same machines, and the differences sit mostly where you cannot see them.

The business editions come with Windows 11 Pro instead of Home. That one change is most of the story. Pro is what lets a computer join your company's Microsoft 365, take its security settings, and be set up remotely. A Home computer can be upgraded, but someone does it by hand, one machine at a time.

They can belong to your company before they ship. A business Surface can be registered to your Microsoft 365 account at purchase. It goes straight to the person who will use it, they sign in with their work account, and it sets itself up with their apps, files and settings. Nobody unboxes it in the office first.

They get fixed differently. Every Surface comes with a one-year warranty. Business models can add Advanced Exchange, where Microsoft ships the replacement before you send the broken one back, and protection plans that cover drops and cracked screens for up to five years. Those plans must be bought within 45 days of the computer. Most people learn that on day 46.

The chips and extras differ too. The 2026 business editions offer Intel or Snapdragon processors, a built-in privacy screen option, and management tools the consumer models lack. They cost more. For a business, they are worth it.

The consumer model is not a bad computer. It is a computer nobody can manage. That is fine on a kitchen table and a problem when it holds your client list.

Here is how equipment works with us. We standardize on a small number of models, buy the business editions, register them before they ship, and keep a spare on our shelf for the day one fails. More on computers and equipment.

If your computers are due, that is a conversation we would rather have before the first one fails.

Questions people ask

Can a consumer Surface be upgraded to work like the business edition?

Partly. Windows 11 Home can be upgraded to Pro for a fee, and the computer can then join Microsoft 365 and be managed. The pieces only the business edition has, registration to the company before it ships and the longer protection plans, cannot be added afterwards.

Is Surface for Business worth the extra cost for a small firm?

For a business that keeps client data on it, yes. The business edition arrives ready to be managed, sets itself up for the person who uses it, and can be covered against drops for up to five years. The consumer model costs less and cannot do any of that without hand work.

How does a business Surface set itself up before anyone touches it?

It is registered to the company's Microsoft 365 at purchase. When the person signs in with their work account for the first time, it takes the company's settings and apps on its own.
